In this tutorial on how to assemble our bowud wall shelves, we will break down the installation into 10 steps, each with an illustration:
Locate the location of the fasteners
Drill
Installing the dowels (the longest possible)
The key to success: flat-head screws
Position the board on the bindings to align them
Tighten the fasteners as much as possible
Align the rod of the fastener with the holes in the shelf
Check the angle of each of the fixing brackets
Insert the shelf into the fixing brackets
It's over!
Estimated installation time: 20-30 minutes per shelf
Tools required:
Drill / screwdriver,
Laser or spirit level,
Pencil or pen (+ painter's tape)
Wick (usually 8)
Long anchors, suitable for your wall
Flat head screws
Phillips screwdriver or Allen key for your flathead screws
Flat screwdriver for adjusting screws of fixing consoles
That's all!

The key to success is a flat head screw
For your information, we have installed 6 wall shelves here, all inlaid in real walnut:
4 * 150 cm, arranged in the living room
2 * 200 cm, arranged in the room
Here we go,
1. Locate the location of the fasteners
These hardware elements, also called fixing brackets, are to be placed on the wall on which you wish to fix your bowud wall shelves.
To do this, we suggest placing a strip of painter's tape on the wall, allowing you to mark your various points without it being visible later.
If you're lucky enough to have a laser level, you can mark your alignment marks directly. If not, you can use your shelf as a ruler on which to place a spirit level - also available on Smartphones, just in case... - .
To know the distance between each fixing bracket, and in relation to each of the two edges, simply measure their positions at the back of your shelf.
2. Drill
Using the marks made in the previous step, you now need to drill each of the 2 holes per mounting bracket.
This step is key to recognizing the type of wall in which you are fixing your shelf.
The type of wall will determine your choice of anchors as well as the load capacity of your invisible wall shelf.
A plasterboard wall does not actually have the same tear resistance as a solid concrete wall.
Once all the holes are made, you can remove the adhesive strip.
These first two steps are clearly the most time-consuming and delicate of the entire operation of installing your wall shelves.
3. Place the dowels (the longest possible)
Now that the adhesive strip is removed you can place the dowels in each of the holes.
Again, it is important to choose the correct anchor for the type of wall you are fixing your shelf to.
We also recommend that you use the longest possible dowels to increase the load capacity of your wall shelves, adapted to the depth of your wall.
For example, illustrated by our photos, 7 out of 8 holes were in a solid wall, the last one in a plasterboard (obviously...). We therefore placed 7 plastic anchors for solid walls, by hand or with a hammer, as well as 1 anchor for plasterboard (Molly) tightened with pliers.
4. The key to success: flat-head screws
A flat-head screw is the key to securing your shelves securely. Here, we used flat-head lag screws with integrated washers.
The integrated washer is a plus, the flat head is absolutely essential if you don't want the fixing console to move against the screw (with a conical head for example).
Secure the mounting brackets using these screws, without tightening them completely.
Next step!
5. Position the board on the bindings to align them
Not having screwed the fixing brackets all the way in now allows them all to be aligned with the shelf.
The easiest way is to position the shelf on the fixing brackets so that they are positioned correctly.
A simple visual check should allow you to see this and, if it does not happen automatically, to accompany the fixing brackets to align them and level them parallel to the shelf.
6. Tighten the fasteners as far as possible
You can now screw the flat head screws as far as possible against the mounting bracket in the wall.
Tighten firmly, but do not overtighten, otherwise you risk breaking the anchor in the wall and thus reducing the pull-out resistance.
Don't remove the shelf from where it is, you will need it again for the next step.
Yes, we do everything to optimize the installation…
7. Align the rod of the fastener with the holes in the shelf
You may have noticed that the rod of the mounting bracket can be offset to the right or left by 3 millimeters.
This will allow you to correct any slight offset made during step 1 – positioning the markers, or 2 – drilling.
Now it's your turn to align the rods of the fixing brackets with the holes in the shelves.
The two screws along the rod allow, firstly, to lock the position of the rod along the fixing console, secondly to add an angle to this rod.
Adding an angle helps compensate for any unevenness in the wall.
It's up to you to lock the rod's position by tightening one of the two screws. We'll have fun adding more angle, if necessary, in the next step.
8. Check the angle of each of the fixing brackets
Place the shelf flat (or on the back edge as in our photo) on the fixing brackets to check that the angle of each of the fixings is correct.
Individually adjust and set these angles as needed by tightening each of the two screws along the mounting rod.
You can also, at this stage, possibly add an angle to your fixing rods to compensate for any unevenness in the wall.
You can also intentionally choose to put more of an upward angle on the shelf to ensure that nothing can roll off the shelf and fall.
9. Insert the shelf into the fixing brackets
We suggest breaking this down into several stages:
Slide the shelf halfway up the mounting brackets
Adjust and tighten, if necessary, one last time the two angle screws along the rod
Slide the shelf all the way to the bottom of the mounting brackets, until it touches the wall.
10. It's over!
This involved the installation of 6 walnut wall shelves: 4 * 150 cm arranged as a wall bookcase in the living room + 2 * 200 cm staggered in the bedroom.
A big thank you to our customer (left), to Michel the craftsman installer (right), as well as to his colleague Piotr, for all 3 of them agreeing to be photographed, on this gray morning, during the different stages of installation of our beautiful bowud wooden wall shelves.

We hope this tutorial will help you install your shelves in the simplest and most methodical way possible.
Good installation,
The Bowud Team
