This article, being written during the lockdown, is certainly motivated by the difficulties we are currently facing but will be just as relevant when we can physically go to our DIY stores again.
We have listed the different sources of supply that you can use to order online , or collect in store , the different tools that you will need to install your beautiful bowud wall shelves.
As a reminder, you can find our illustrated tutorial for installing our wall shelves as well as the necessary tools (tool kit) for the perfect wall shelf installer by clicking on it.
We therefore offer you, through links to well-known websites (Manomano, Leroy Merlin, Amazon, etc.) that we have selected, to directly find what you need to install your beautiful wall shelves, namely:
Concrete drill bit
Anchors , mixed or expansion (and clamp if expansion)
Screw (lag screw)
Concrete drill bit
Drilling into your wall (possibly with a metal detector) will allow you to determine the type of wall. As a reminder, you can find the wall types we've listed by clicking here.
Concrete drill bit with a diameter of 8 mm
We recommend an 8 mm diameter concrete drill bit (for drills) as this is the diameter that best fits our wall mounting brackets.
- The rest of our proposals are based on this diameter of 8 mm -
So,
Website: Leroy Merlin, Tivoly brand, diameter: 8 mm, Length: 230 mm, pack of 1, price €10.00 incl. VAT, excluding shipping costs
Website: Manomano, Fischer brand, diameter: 8 mm, Length: 115 mm, pack of 1, price: €8.35 incl. VAT, excl. shipping costs
Ankles
Here we distinguish between classic anchors , for solid and hollow walls , and expansion anchors to be used and inserted into plasterboard .
As a reminder, you can find the list of existing anchors, by type of wall , that we have drawn up for you by clicking here.
You can also find the maximum load allowed per shelf , depending on the length of the shelf and the type of wall, on this other link by clicking here.
Classic ankles
We recommend using Fischer Duopower mixed anchors. These are the same anchors we use on our installations and have never encountered any problems. This is the only reason we recommend them.
You can, however, quite easily use other pegs of the same type.
We also offer you this very well-produced video which will allow you to better understand the deformation of the dowel allowing the load to be properly held in place in the wall.
YouTube video:
Dimensions of the dowels:
Diameter: 8 mm
Length: 40 mm
So, here is the list of the different stores, physical or online, in which you can find these dowels:
Website: Leroy Merlin, Fischer brand, diameter 8 mm, Length: 40 mm, pack of 100, price: €13.90 incl. VAT, excluding shipping costs
Website: Manomano, Fischer brand, diameter 8 mm, Length: 40 mm, pack of 100, price: €8.49 incl. VAT, excluding shipping costs
Expansion anchors
They are only to be used in plasterboards because they have a means of deformation which is specific to this wall material .
Expansion anchors, unlike classic anchors, are generally sold with their own fixing screw.
For classic anchors, we recommend using lag screws (next paragraph) because the screw head is flat, not conical, which is absolutely essential for the mounting bracket to be held securely against the wall.
So, be careful to select , just as we did, an expansion anchor kit with flat head screws
So, here is the list of the different stores, physical or online, in which you can find these dowels:
Website: Leroy Merlin, Standers brand, diameter 8 mm, Length: 46 mm, set of 10 dowels + screws, price: €4.50 incl. VAT, excluding shipping costs
Website: Manomano, Fischer brand, diameter 8 mm, Length: 46 mm, pack of 100 anchors + screws, price: €18.73 incl. VAT, excluding shipping costs
One last element necessary for using these expansion anchors:
The “Molly” pliers needed to secure the expansion anchor against the wall, on the inside, if you don’t already have one (you or your neighbor!)
Website: Amazon, Fischer brand, pack of 1, price: €26.47 incl. VAT, excl. shipping costs
The screws
After drilling your wall using your 8 mm diameter concrete drill bit, then placing your mixed anchor in the hole made, it is now time to fix the fixing bracket against the wall using 6 mm diameter lag screws.
Again, if the wall is plasterboard and you used expansion anchors with integrated screws (flat head), you will not need these lag screws.
As mentioned previously, as well as in the assembly tutorial and the perfect shelf installer's kit, it is necessary to use flat-head screws of the lag screw type in order to ensure the best possible hold of the mounting bracket against the wall.

So, here is the list of the different stores, physical or online, in which you can find these dowels:
Website: Leroy Merlin, Standers brand, diameter 6 mm, Length: 50 mm, set of 8 screws, price: €2.15 incl. VAT, excluding shipping costs
Website: Vis-Express, SWG brand, diameter 6 mm, Length: 50 mm, pack of 10 screws, price: €2.40 incl. VAT, excluding shipping costs
